| Gay identity development across cultural groups in the United States (09/11/2007) |
|
My name is Benjamin Donner and I am a clinical psychology doctoral student at the University of
Massachusetts, Boston. I am currently carrying out my dissertation research on gay identity development
across cultural groups in the United States, and have been consistently impressed with the work and
events put on by Asian Express and Friends in Atlanta. I thought you might be willing and/or able to
help distribute my survey to individuals interested in contributing to cultural equality within the
psychological literature.
As you may know, academic studies into the developmental experiences of gay and bisexual men of color are extremely scarce, and Asian-Americans are especially underrepresented. It is my hope that this research project will shed greater light on those experiences that may be unique to specific cultural groups of gay and bisexual males in the U.S. so that clinicians and organizations are ultimately better equipped to both assist and appreciate our strengths and needs. With that in mind, I would greatly appreciate your distribution of my internet survey to individuals who might be willing to participate. Participants must be biological males, age 18 or over, residents of the United States, and attracted to other biological males. The survey should take between 10 and 15 minutes to complete. All responses will be entirely anonymous - email and IP addresses will not be requested or even identifiable - and will be kept in the strictest of confidence. If you're willing to share it with others, the survey can be found online at the following link: Should you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me at benjamindonner@gmail.com. Respectfully Yours, Benjamin Donner, M.A. Clinical Psychology Doctoral Candidate University of Massachusetts, Boston |
| Gay Identity Development |
|
My name is Parrish Paul and I am a doctoral candidate in counseling psychology at Penn State. I am
currently doing research on how meaning making (or how people understand their experience of themselves,
others, and the world) may affect gay identity development. As a gay man myself, I want to understand
more about how some people come to celebrate their gay identities while others struggle profoundly to
accept themselves. I am seeking research volunteers to participate in this study. Volunteers must be
18 years old to participate. In particular, I am interested in talking with gay men from a range of
ages who are currently or were formerly religiously- or spiritually-affiliated. I am interested in
hearing from these men about the ongoing experience of developing a gay identity in a culture that is
less than supportive and may be experienced as harmful or oppressive. Participation in this study will
involve completing two brief questionnaires and then being part of a two-hour interview. The interview
will be conducted in person or on the telephone, but the questionnaires can be completed online or
through postal mail. The interviews will be audio-taped, but the information received will be kept
confidential. If you are interested in participating, please begin at this
website.
You may also email me at Parrishlpaul@aol.com or call me at 814-769-3931. Also, if you know anyone who has these experiences and would be interested in participating, then please pass this information along. This study is being supervised by Dr. Kathleen Biechske. She can be reached at (814) 865-3296 if you have questions or concerns. Dr. Bieschke's address is 327 CEDAR Building, University Park, PA, 16802. This study is approved by the Penn State Office of Research Protections (#24596). |
| Sexual minorities’ exposure to prejudice and discrimination |
|
My name is Melanie Morrison and I am an Associate Professor in the
Department of Psychology at the University of Saskatchewan. I am also
the Co-Chair of the Canadian Psychological Association’s Section on
Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGII;
http://www.cpa.ca/sections/sexualorientationandgenderidentityissues/.
I, along with my research assistant, Rebecca Quaale, am conducting a
study looking at sexual minorities’ exposure to prejudice and
discrimination and how this can affect health and well-being. As you
may be aware, there is a dearth of research actually documenting the
experiences of sexual minority persons and how this influences their
health.
We would like to invite ANY individual who identifies as gay or lesbian to participate in our study by going to: www.socialjusticeresearch.com. As well, please feel free to circulate the link to ANY friends, family members, and/or colleagues you think might be interested in participating. THE SURVEY LINK ALSO CAN BE SENT TO WOMEN AND MEN WHO DO NOT LIVE IN CANADA. Participants are not required to put any identifying information such as their name, address, or e-mail on the questionnaire. Thus, participants can feel comfortable answering questions honestly and feel confident that, because we cannot identify any one person, all of the information provided will be anonymous. The survey has been approved by the Ethics Review Board (beh 05-02) of the University of Saskatchewan and is funded by the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation. We would be happy to answer your questions and respond to any comments you might have about the study. Our contact information is located below. We greatly appreciate your consideration and support, and hope to hear from you soon. With kind regards, Melanie A.
