Opens October 24, 2008 (FRI) - MOVIE - YEAR OF THE FISH

YEAR OF THE FISH is an independent Asian related film opening in Atlanta (United Artists Tara 4) on October 24th and will run for at least a week.  This film was brought to the attention of the A&F board and we thought some of the members may be interested.  The film is a modern day fairytale, done in rotoscoping, with an Asian cast. It is set in New York's Chinatown.  An optimistic young girl travels alone to New York City where she hopes to earn money to send home to her ailing father.  Expecting to work in a beauty salon, the girl is instead delivered into the hands of her father’s distant cousin, an embittered woman who runs a seedy massage parlor.  The girl surrenders her passport as collateral for her “debt” and is informed of her duties.  When she refuses to do the requisite sex work, the girl accepts her fate as the operation’s browbeaten servant.  Sprinkled with fantasy, romance and suspense, YEAR OF THE FISH is presented in a delicately layered animation style that evokes a painting come to life.  The film’s first-rate ensemble cast includes Ken Leung (LOST, X-MEN 3, RUSH HOUR), Tsai Chin (THE JOY LUCK CLUB), Randall Duk Kim (THE MATRIX RELOADED, upcoming DRAGONBALL) and introduces An Nguyen.  For more information see http://www.yearofthefish.com/

October 4th, 2008 (SAT) - Kennesaw Mountain Hike

Date: October 4, 2008 (Saturday)
Time: 10:30 am
Duration: Hike approximately 2-3 hours.  Optional film at 10:00am (18 minutes)
Activities: 5.4 Mile Hike - optional museum tour, film and lunch
Difficulty: First mile is strenuous, remaining 4.4 miles are moderate to easy.

More Information

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is a historic park located on the edge of Marietta and Kennesaw.  The mountain was a major battlefield in the Campaign for Atlanta and one of the most significant battlefields in the Civil War.  Our 5.4 hike will lead us on a loop trail from the Visitor Center (museum) to the top of the mountain, to Pigeon Hill, then back to the Visitor Center.  Kennesaw Mountain peaks at 1808 feet, allowing for many wonderful views of Atlanta and surrounding areas.  The first mile of the hike is strenuous in that we will climb approximately 700 feet from the Visitor Center to the mountain’s summit.  The path is wide and easy, just the incline is strenuous.  The hike after the first mile is moderate to easy.  For those who would like to hike, but are afraid the first mile will be too difficult, the park service offers a shuttle to the top for $2.00.  Prior to the hike, at 10:00 am there is an optional 18 minute film on the Atlanta Campaign and Battle of Kennesaw.  There is also a museum at the Visitor Center that you can tour for free.  For those interested, following the hike we will have a cookout in the picnic area at the Visitor Center.  We’ll supply the burgers and chips (bring your own drinks).  We will meet at the Visitor Center located near the corner of Old US Hwy 41 and Stilesboro Road (entrance is off of Stilesboro Road) at 10:30 am.  For those who would like to see the film, please arrive by 9:55 am.  The hike begins at 10:30 am.

July 4th - 6th, 2008 (FRI - SUN) - ATLANTA PRIDE - We need your help!

Asians & Friends will once again have a booth at Atlanta Pride and be marching in the Parade. Our booth number is P7, which is indoors near the entrance to the AIDS Quilt.

PARADE – We will be marching in the parade carrying the various flags of our members’ countries.  We would like a strong show of support at the parade.  The parade starts at 1:00 pm on Sunday.  We are asking members to arrive by 12:00 pm.  Our space D15.  Here’s a link to the parade setup diagram: http://atlantapride.org/info/parade/general/documents/2008ParadeAssemblyGrid.pdf.

We need your help to spread the word about our great group!  Pride is once again upon us and we need our members to help man the booth and walk in the parade.  We are asking that members sign up for a two hour slot in the booth and to join us for the parade.  So far we have had only three had members sign up to help with the booth.  Remember, we are a member run organization and it takes everyone’s participation to be successful.

Booth Hours:
Friday, July 4th – 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Saturday, July 5th – 11:00 am to 9:00 pm
Sunday, July 6th – 11:00 am to 8:00 pm

There is swimming all day starting at 2 p.m. with a barbecue meal at 5 p.m. Enjoy the sunshine until about 8 p.m. when the party ends and we can head over to the fireworks shows or get an early start on Pride Weekend Festivities.  All that is needed is you! We can either take the short walk from the school or take advantage of the SUV shuttle which will be continuously running back and forth to the house. Please note that it's very important that we don't park on the streets as the congestion is an inconvenience to Chris' neighbors, creates a hazard for emergency vehicles and can be dangerous to our members. Chris has gone to a lot of trouble to remedy situation so please take advantage of it.

Fireworks: Fireworks have historically been a part of our fun.  However, with the continued drought and the inherent dangers with the show we have decided the risk is too great to honor that tradition this year.  Let’s do a rain dance and bring it back for next year. We can finish early enough to make it to one of the fireworks shows hosted by the city.

May 18th, 2008 (SUN) - Hindu Temple Tour

This will be a guided tour, which is free. We would like to promote this event to the general membership as it should be a great cultural experience. I have provided an estimate of 25 members for the tour, but will need to provide an update a few days before the visit, so anyone interested in joining us for this event should RSVP to Jeff Cordry We plan to meet at Jeff's place in Midtown between 9:30 and 10am and carpool to the temple, which is about an 18 mile drive (estimated 30 minutes). Anyone not interested in carpooling could also meet us there by 10:45am. Keep in mind this is a guided tour, so please try to arrive early.

The following are some suggestions/guidelines for our visit which I have received: There is no charge for group visits. However, each member of your group can help us serve the community by bringing a vegetarian canned food item during their visit. We will have a collection bin for the items. Thank you. In order to make your visit enjoyable for all of us please note the following information and guidelines: Shorts, skirts, and sleeveless tops are not allowed. Photography and videography is not allowed from the podium level and inside the Mandir. All visitors must remove their shoes when they enter the Mandir. Shoe racks are located within the Mandir. It is recommended that everyone wears socks as the marble inside the Mandir gets cold during the winter. Handicap ramp way is available for those who can not climb stairs, and we also have elevator access in the Mandir. The structure is made of stone, so we request everyone to be extra careful and use handrails when possible to prevent injuries. We have ample parking space for cars, vans, or buses. When you arrive, please inform our volunteer at the entrance that you have arrived.

October 6, 2007 (SAT) - CPACS 3rd Annual TEA (Together Empowering Asian Americans) Walk
The main purpose of this year's TEA Walk is to join the Power in Numbers as we walk in solidarity for JUST immigrant rights. As the first and most comprehensive pan-Asian service agency in the region, CPACS has been at the forefront of witnessing the growth of the Asian American community and the challenges coupled with that growth. The walk will take place from the main building of CPACS, and will last approximately 2 miles (round trip) along Bufford Highway

We're inviting all Asian social services providers, groups, and individuals to come together and walk on October 6th. Community groups are encouraged to bring their banners to show their presence in the Atlanta community. Registration begins at 9am followed with a short opening ceremony at 9:45am. The walk starts at 10am. Light breakfast, refreshments and T-shirt will be provided to walkers.

Join us afterwards and enjoy Asian Food and Bubble Tea Drink from community vendors. There will also be a health screening fair where you can get your Flu Shots and Blood Pressure Screened. Advocates will be on site so that you can learn the facts about the immigration, language access & voter registration rights issues. The TEA Walk will be the launch of the "Dollar a Person" Campaign to fight for immigrant rights. Bring your family as there will be children activities and games, too.

To pre-register yourself, your family or your group, please contact Marianne Chung by email at marianne.chung@cpacs.org or by phone at 770-936-0969 ext.22. Volunteers are needed, too!

Please pass along to others who may be interested.

Saturday, June 23rd - Pride Party
DJ Kaze was our special guest DJ at Jim and Sean's home at and his spinning kept the party going strong! Just look in the gallery at the pictures and you can see for yourself.

According to David Magazine (Sept. 2006), DJ Kaze is "...a new local DJ who's starting to make heads turn with his sounds."

DJ Kaze (kah'-zeh) has been spinning and producing for five years, turning out sets for a variety of clubs and parties. He has spun at private events for HRC and A Legendary Event, Atlanta's premier event planner and caterer. He went international in 2004, when his beats were featured at The Village nightclub in Osaka, Japan. And throughout 2006, he was a regular fixture in the booth overlooking Atlanta's newest dance floor at Amsterdam-Atlanta. As a musician and on-the-fly composer, he has worked with Atlanta's top-rated comedy improv troupe, Whole World Theatre (www.wholeworldtheatre.com), for the past decade and continues to DJ and play keyboards there one weekend a month. DJ Kaze is also the official DJ for the 2007 Jerusalem House Halloween Bash (www.jerursalemhouse.org).

Saturday, May 19th - Asian & Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
We celebrated the 3rd Annual Asian & Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on Saturday, May 19, 2007 at the Center for Pan Asian Community Services (CPACS), 3760 Park Avenue, Doraville, GA 30340

We also celebrated Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month (May)!

As part of the "RICE Matters" (Reduce Infection through Comprehensive Education), Yotin gave us a "hands-on" demonstration of safe sex practices! I'm sure there will soon be pictures in the gallery that will document all of the things we learned!

We also have to thank Yotin for his gracious hospitality and his great food! He had prepared so much good food: garlic chicken, spring rolls, fried rice, stuffed jalepeno peppers and brownies! I can assure you that I ate my fair share of everything! Thanks Yo! I can't wait for Yo's next event!!

CPACS was the event Sponsor with partnership with Asian Express & Friends Atlanta, United Way and Atlanta AIDS Partnership Fund.

Saturday, April 14th, Songkran - Thai New Year Party
In Thailand, this time of year will be the peak of Summer. And you know how hot it is around the equator. We replicated what Thai people do to quench the heat - splashing water! This was a pool and potluck party held at Jim and Sean's home. About 35 people attended and there was plenty of traditional Thai food available for all!
Sunday, March 18th, Spring Fling with the New Board
Approximately 35 people attended the party at The Center of Pan Asian Community Services (CPACS) located at 3760 Park Ave. Doraville, GA 30340. This was a pot luck party and people brought lots of Asian dishes for everyone's enjoyment. We were also delighted by all the talent that was displayed by the group with the Karaoke set up at the party. No singing experience was required to join in on the fun (and it was apparent)!! A good time was had by all. See for yourself on our Gallery page.
Saturday, February 17th, Chinese New Year
Approximately 80 people attended the CNY party at Lamar's house to celebrate the Year of the Golden Pig. We played some Chinese New Year-based games to help people get to know each other better.
